Degree in Medicine and Surgery
an innovative and multidisciplinary approach
The main objective of our medical program (available in Rome, Novedrate, Fano, and Ascoli Piceno) is to train doctors with a broad and integrated vision of health and disease. This educational pathway focuses on community health, disease prevention, and health promotion. It also places particular emphasis on the humanities, integrating scientific methodology with patient-centered care to address the challenges of modern medicine with sensitivity and understanding.
Graduates from Link University will be equipped with a multidisciplinary perspective, having acquired the ability to evaluate the patient as a whole. This ensures that future doctors can take into account individual characteristics to promote disease prevention and foster well-being at both the community and territorial levels.
Multidisciplinary Perspective and Acquired Skills
The study program promotes the integration of knowledge from different disciplines, from basic sciences to advanced clinical and surgical practices. The ability to connect these areas of knowledge is fundamental for training doctors capable of considering the patient in all dimensions—physical and psychosocial—while promoting an inclusive and personalized approach to care.
Fundamental Skills of the Medical Graduate
The program is committed to providing students with a set of essential skills for the medical profession. Upon completion of the degree, students will have acquired:
- Integration of medical knowledge across different scientific fields.
- Formulation of diagnoses and treatment plans even with limited or incomplete information.
- A solid evidence-based approach to critically analyze medical literature.
- Deep awareness of the social and ethical implications of medical practice.
- Strict adherence to the principles of medical deontology in the best interest of the patient.
Precision Medicine in the Educational Program
Special attention is dedicated to precision medicine, an innovative field that is transforming healthcare. The ability to tailor personalized therapies and diagnoses based on the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle characteristics of patients represents a major development in modern medicine, optimizing treatments while minimizing side effects.
Study Path and Professional Qualification
The six-year program provides a direct academic pathway toward the professional qualification of physician. Students are immersed in an environment that promotes academic excellence and professional maturation, preparing them to become competent, ethical global doctors.
Is this degree an MD or MBBS?
Yes. In Italy, the educational path to becoming a recognized physician is a 6-year program known as Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico in Medicina e Chirurgia. For international applicants, it is useful to understand that this qualification corresponds to the official Italian Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ). It leads to the title of Medical Doctor, and may be understood as broadly comparable to an MD in North America and an MBBS in the UK and Commonwealth systems.
Upon successful graduation, you will be eligible to pursue medical residency programs and specialization pathways worldwide, subject to the specific licensing and recognition procedures of the destination country (such as the USMLE for the USA or the PLAB for the UK).
Practical Training and Clinical Internships
Practical training is a fundamental pillar of the degree. Students are involved in clinical internships and laboratory activities from the very first years of study. The curriculum is designed to develop clinical skills through traditional methodologies (lectures, seminars) combined with interactive approaches like problem-solving and decision-making activities.
Basic disciplines such as biology, genetics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pathology are directly integrated with the study of pathological mechanisms. Starting from the fourth year, students undertake professional clinical clerkships in affiliated hospitals, completing their practical training alongside the preparation of their final medical thesis.
Medicine and Surgery Study Plan
The degree requires a total of 360 ECTS credits over 6 years. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to manage patient care empathetically and effectively.
The study plan includes:
- Basic subjects: fundamental sciences (anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology) essential for understanding disease mechanisms.
- Clinical subjects: deep knowledge in various medical fields (cardiology, neurology, surgery, pediatrics, etc.).
- Practical subjects: laboratory activities to apply classroom knowledge and develop specific skills.
- Internships (Clerkships): hospital rotations starting from the third year to become familiar with the healthcare environment.
At the end of the study program, students will have acquired the skills to:
- Diagnose and treat the most common diseases with a multidisciplinary approach.
- Integrate medical knowledge with a deep understanding of the patient's needs.
- Manage patient care with empathy and professionalism.
- Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals.
- Face the challenges of modern medicine with a critical and evidence-based approach.
The educational program of the Medicine and Surgery course is designed to train well-rounded doctors, ready to face present and future challenges in the healthcare field.
